Chin-cup Appliance
What Is a Chin-cup Appliance?
A chin-cup is a removable appliance made up of a soft pad that rests against the chin, and is connected on top of the head with an adjustable strap. The chin-cup is designed to work together with a palatal expansion appliance to help correct open bites and slow down excessive downward growth of the lower jaw. With consistent wear of the chin-cup, we have an opportunity to avoid the need for removal of permanent teeth and future jaw surgery. We have found that the chin-cup appliance is most comfortable and effective when it is worn as a part of early orthodontic treatment, between the ages of 6 and 11. The chin-cup is an important part of your orthodontic treatment and needs your cooperation to be effective.
When should the Chin-cup be worn?
For the best results, the chin-cup must be worn 12 hours per day. This is a combination of waking hours and sleeping hours. Over the first three days, you will gradually build up to wearing the chin-cup for 12 hours, following this schedule:
DAY 1 2 awake hours
DAY 2 4 awake hours
DAY 3 4 awake hours + 8 sleeping hours = 12 total hours
Please keep in mind that the chin-cup, in order to be effective, needs to be worn 12 hours per day. The hours do not have to be consecutive, but at least one hour of wear at a time is most effective. Your waking hours can be while doing homework, watching TV, or reading. Wearing the chin-cup only when sleeping will not be enough to be effective.
How long will I need the chin-cup?
With excellent cooperation, most of our patients will need the Chin-cup for 6 months. This will greatly depend on your cooperation in wearing your chin-cup for the required 12 hours per day.Helpful Hints
Do not wear your chin-cup during any sports, running, bike riding, or during horseplay. Continuous wear is the key to success! Please bring your chin-cup to each appointment so that it can be adjusted. You may experience mild discomfort when first getting used to the chin-cup. Use Advil or Tylenol, as needed. This soreness will go away after a few days of daily wear.
Congratulations!
You are on your way to a lifetime of beautiful and healthy smiles.
